Collie is situated in the South West region of Western
Australia and named after the Collie
River on which it is situated and in turn is
named after Dr Alexander Collie. He and William
Preston were the first Europeans to
explore the area in 1829.
Collie is mainly known as a coal-producing centre, but also offers
industrial, aquaculture tourism industries and agricultural. Wellington
Dam to the West is a popular location for fishing, swimming and boating.
This town has a significant role in the provision of electricity for
Western Australia. Collie has three power stations and two coal mines.
Wagin is derived from a usually dry
salt lake south of the town called Wagin
Lake. 'Wagin' either means 'the place where emus watered' or is a
variation of 'wedge-an' an Aboriginal word for 'emu'.
The Giant Ram was built in Wagin and was put in place in 1985 and is one
of the towns major attractions. Many tourists visit the ram which is located in
the Wetlands Park.
"Narroging" is an Aboriginal name
initially known for Narrogin with an uncertain meaning, Narrogin may have derived
from "gnargagin" which means "place of water", "bat
camp" or "plenty of everything".

Merredin is located in the Central Wheatbelt approximately midway Perth and Kalgoorlie. The town came into existence during the goldrush. The area to the east of Merredin was officially proclaimed a goldfield in 1888. Prospectors and fossickers poured through the area over the next decade.
We stopped in a free overnight rest area with about another dozen caravans and camp fires.
In the 1890s CY O’Connor engineered a pipeline to carry freshwater daily to the Goldfields from a dam on the Helena River near Mundaring Weir in Perth pumping 5 million imperial gallons of water pumped in eight successive stages through 530 km in a 760 mm diameter pipe to the Mount Charlotte Reservoir in Kalgoorlie. The water is then reticulated to various mining centres in the Goldfields. The Goldfields Pipeline is possibly the world's longest water main.
